- they long to ‘live off the fatta the land’
- Lennie wants to even tho he doesn’t rly understands, because he sees it makes George happy and he loves the idea of owning ‘rabbits’
- for George the dream is to be free but he knows it is unacheivable.
- they speak of it most days to provide a break from reality and to give them hope

- knows it is impossible as he tele Lennie that ‘nobody ever gets to heaven and no body gets no land’ because he has suffered a lifetime of isolation and disappointment
El - still holds onto a bit of hope by studying the ‘California civil code for 1905’ so he can learn about his rights
- he is used by Steinbeck to show that faith in a dream can draw someone from bitter hopelessness, as when Candy mentions that he is involved, crooks jumps at the opportunity to join them

Dreams to be needed
- biggest fear is symbolically shown through the death of his dog he does not want to end up getting Canned having nowhere to go
- is weak due to his disability and age
- has the lowest ranked job ‘swamper’
- when he hears George and Lennie speak about the dream he speaks ‘excitedly and ‘eagerly’ and willing to do anything to achieve a good life outside the ranch

Dreams of being a movie star
- ‘a guy tol’ me he could put me in pitchers’
- ’ he says I could go with the show’
- she can’t because she is married to Curley
- she is said to wear ‘mikes with red ostrich feathers’ to signify that she is restricted and unable to achieve her dream.
