Dreams Flashcards
Similarity Rule
In organizing stimuli, we group elements that appear similar together
Figure-Ground Rule
In organizing stimuli, we tend to automatically distinguish between a figure and a ground: the figure with more detail stands out in the background with less detail
Closure Rule
In organizing stimuli, we tend to fill in any missing parts of a figure and see the figure as complete.
Proximity Rule
In organizing stimuli, we group together objects that are physically close to one another
Simplicity Rule
In organizing stimuli, the stimuli are in the simplest way possible
Continuity Rule
in organizing stimuli, we tend to favor smooth or continuous paths when interpreting a series of points or lines
Perceptual Constancy
Our tendency to perceive sizes, shapes, brightness, and colors as remaining the same even though their physical characters are constantly changing
Size constancy
tendency to perceive objects as remaining the same size even when images on retina are growing or shrinking
Shape Constancy
tendency to perceive on object as retaining its same shape even though when view from different angles its shape is always changing
Brightness Constancy
Tendency to perceive brightness as remaining the same in change illumination
Color Constancy
Tendency to perceive colors as remaining stable despite differences in lighting
Depth Perception
Ability of eye and brain to add a third dimension, depth, to all visual perceptions even though images projected on retina in two dimensions
Retina Disparity
Binocular depth cue that depends on distance between your eyes close and distant objects
Monocular Depth Cues
Produced by signals from single eye arranged in the environment
- Linear Perception: parallel lines converge in distance
- Relative Size: expect 2 objects to be same size but don’t
- Interposition: objects overlap closer and further
- Light and Shadow: depth perception
- Texture Gradient: sharp being close distant being less sharp
- Atmospheric Perspective: presence of dust, smog, clouds, vapor
- Motion Parallax: speed of moving objects
Illusion
perceive image as being strangely distorted that in reality doesn’t exist. Manipulates the perceptual cues.
