Q

Linking assumption to therapy

A

Unconscious mind: the main aim of psychoanalysis os to make the unconscious mind conscious, so people can become aware of their unconscious influences. Dream analysis is said to be the via regis to the unconscious mind.
Childhood experiences: Any traumatic event event that had occurred during early childhood may have been repressed and surface in the form of dreams. To uncover such repressed memories, the therapist would have to offer interpretations of the dream in the context of the clients life.
Triparte personality: Ego becomes suppressed in dreams and the id has free reign and dreams might present unconscious motives, wishes and desires that would be socially unacceptable in the waking world.

Process

A

1) Recalls dream to the therapist what the dreamer remembers is the manifest content.
2) Process of dream work is used to understand the dream. Dreamwork is when the the latent content is transferred to the manifest content
3) Condensation- many elements make up the learnt content of the dream are represented by just one image or picture
Displacement: Important latent information represented as small insignificant features in the manifest content. The emotion linked to the experience is detached and attached to another.
Representation: abstract thought is represented in an image.
Symbolism: any significant features of the dream may be replaced by a symbol for example, a sword and a penis
Elaboration: Collecting all the information in the dream and fitting them together to make sense of the dream, giving it a logical story.
4) Reverse the process of dreamwork to uncover the underlying meaning, like decoding the manifest content back to the latent content. Important that therapist completely understands clients situation and offer different interpretations of the dream, so they can chose which one fits the most.
