Shade
A darker version of a color; adding black or the compliment of the color
Tint
A lighter version of a color; adding white to create
Primary Colors
Red, Blue, Yellow; The three colors almost every color of the rainbow comes from with the exception of white.
Secondary Colors
When you add two primary colors together equally. Red + Yellow = OrangeYellow + Blue = GreenBlue + Red = Violet (Purple)
Tertiary Colors
When you add a primary and a secondary color together; ie - Red + Orange = Red-Orange, Blue + Green = Blue-Green… etc.
Complimentary Colors
Colors that sit directly across each other from the color wheel. They make each other appear brighter and bolder. Red and Green, Blue and Orange, Yellow and Violet (Christmas, Gators, Lakers)
Analogous Colors
Colors that sit directly next to each other on the color wheel; ie Red, Red-Violet, Violet
Warm Colors
Colors that appear warmer, brighter, and bolder. They normally appear closer to you. The colors are red, yellow, and orange. If there is more red in the violet (red-violet), it tends to be categorized in the warmer color area.
Cool Colors
Colors that appear farther, duller, and cooler. They tend to give you a a sense of calm. The colors are blue, green, and violet unless it’s red-violet.
Color Wheel
A circle used to organize colors. All colors fall into the color wheel with the exception of white. The color wheel was created by Sir Isaac Newton.
Hue
Any color that can be plucked in a pure state out of the light spectrum. The technical name for color.
Acrylic
Paint made from pigments & a synthetic plastic binder. Popular alternative to oil paint can also duplicate many of watercolor’s unique characteristics when used in a fluid manner.
Watercolors
Paint made from pigment and a binder (normally gum arabic). It is thinned with water and paints in transparent colors.
Oil Paints
Paint made from pigment and drying oil, normally Linseed.
Brushes
A tool made from either natural or synthetic bristles. Natural bristles are usually animal hair and are used for water media such as watercolor. Synthetic ones are normally made out of nylon.
Dry Brush
A textured application where the brush is fairly dry; using the surface texture, the hairs of the brush, and the amount of paint; creates textured surfaces
Wash
A transparent layer of diluted color that is brushed on.
Glaze
Any transparent wash of color laid over a dry, previously painted area.
GEsso
Ground plaster, chalk or marble mixed with glue or acrylic medium, generally in white. Provides an absorbent ground for oil, acrylic, tempera
Opaque
A paint that is not transparent by nature or intentionally
Scumbling
Dragging or rubbing a color across another color creating a rough texture
Wet on Wet
Painting wet color onto a wet surface; used for watercolor to get the “flowy” effect
Dry on Wet
Painting wet paint onto a completely dry surface; gives crisper lines and edges
Gloss/Gel/Matte Mediums
A substance used to thicken, varnish, slow down, add texture, etc. Used mostly with Acrylic but now can be used with Oil paint
