Epizeuxis
A form of repetition in which a word is repeated immediately for emphasis.
Ecphonesis
An emotional exclamatory phrase.
Aposiopesis
Breaking off in the middle of a sentence
Parrhesia
Boldness or frankness of speech; the act of asking forgiveness for speaking in such a way.
Diacope
A rhetorical device where a word is repeated but separated by a small number of intervening words.
Non-diegetic sound
Any sound that does not come from within the play’s world and that the characters cannot hear.
Diegetic sound
Sound heard by everyone on stage and the audience.
Plastic theatre
Utilisation of props, sound, stage direction and costume to present poetic truths through symbolism.
Props
An object used to support the action of the play.
Intertextual allusion
A subtle or indirect reference to another text, historical period or religious belief.
Verisimilitude
Aspects of a play being believable or having the appearance of being true.
Antebellum
Anything that occurs or exists before the American Civil War.
Stitchomythia
When two characters speak alternate lines of dialogue, usually during an altercation or dispute.
Simultaneous staging
Two things happening at once on stage.
