Plot
Events that make up a story arch & is eventually resolved
Theme
The idea or moral of the story
Protagonist
Central character
Antagonist
Nemesis of the protagonist
Setting
Typically utilized to heighten a particular mood or emotion
Overall Setting
General setting for a complete drama or story
Immediately Setting (for a scene)
Refers to the geographical location or the particular parts of a scene
Soliloquy
A monologue where a character speaks to themself but expresses their thoughts, concerns, and/ or emotions to the audience (doesn’t 4th wall break)
Aside
A character addresses the audience directly but not overheard by the other characters (shorter than soliloquy and DOES 4th wall break)
Tragedy
Character experiences inevitable reversal of fortune (triggered by unrealized flaw of the character)
Tragic Flaw
The trait or quality of a tragic character that prompts their fall
Tragic Hero
The main protagonist in a tragedy of “higher estate” (has a good soul at first but the “flaw” makes them down spiral to their demise)
Foil
A character who serves to highlight the distinctive temperament of the protagonist (sidekick?)
3 main things a tragedy needs
- Unrealized flaw
- A fraught/ flaw that causes the fall
- “Higher state” for the main protagonist
