Cast of characters
The performers in a drama
Act
The main divisions of a drama
Scene
The smaller divisions within an act
Setting
The place and time where the action takes place
Dialogue
The lines spoken by the characters
Stage directions
The directions telling characters how to speak or act; the directions telling how sound, lighting, and props are used
Drama
A story that’s written to be performed by actors for the audience
Plot
A series of events where the characters try to solve a problem or attain a goal
Exposition
Introduces the characters, setting, and conflict
Rising action
The plot events that lead to the climax
Climax
The turning point in the plot that leads to the resolution
Falling action
The part of the plot that leads to the resolution
Resolution
How the conflict is or is not resolved
Point of view
A character’s point of view or perspective
Monologue
A speech given by one actor
Soliloquy
A speech in which a character reveals his or her thoughts and feelings to the audience but not to the other characters
Aside
A comment made to the audience that is not heard by the other characters
Dramatic irony
When the audience knows more than one or more of the characters do
Verbal irony
A character says the opposite of what he or she really means
Theme
The central message the author wants to convey to readers
Antiquated language
A language that was used in the past
Idiom
A common phrase that has a different meaning than the meaning of its individual words
An adage or proverb
An old saying that expresses an accepted truth about life
