Q

What have done as work?

A

For the past 5 years , I have been a researcher in the Cardiology Department of Metropolitan Medical Center. I have conducted clinical studies related to the ingestion of energy drinks like Slamaniad , specifically, focusing on the caffeine content and warnings regarding use provided by Gooddrinks.

Q

What are being asked here?

A

I have been asked here today to give my opinion on whether the ingestion of 3 Slamanaids , in 3 minutes, then engaging in jumping jacks and running in the heat caused or led to the untimely death of Rory Salerno

Q

Why do people with Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy suddenly faint?

A

The Ventricular wall of the heart thickened as a result, there is less space in the heart to fill with blood as is necessary to be pumped to the brain and organs. Since there is less blood being pumped to the brain it leads to fainting. This is known as extreme dehydration

Q

How can people get a heart attack w/ HOCM?

A

The ventricular walls are very large, leading to the inability to obtain blood flow

Q

What does extreme dehydration do to the heart rate ?

A

Extreme dehydration causes the physical heart rate to increase so there is less time to fill ventricles to pump blood to the brain and organs

Q

In the case of Rory, what does his heart rate increasing due to dehydration or working out means for him?

A

It causes more an issue for him than w/ someone without HOCM

15
Q

What is the connection between HOCM & the misuse of Slamanaid?

A

The misuse of Slam, to a person w/ HOCM would cause the individual to more likely suffer from heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and extreme dehydration than any other energy drink since Slamanaid contains caffeine with no electrolytes or salts.

16
Q

What does the caffine and very little electolytes and salts do to the body of an individual w/ HOCM?

A

The caffeine elevates the heart rate and an electrolyte imbalance. This disparity in supply and demand in the body causes the heart to exert itself into exhaustion. The individual will develop lactic acid in the tissues which it cannot release dur to HOCM. In addition, the individual is not supplying oxygen to the blood and organs efficiently

17
Q

What is the caffeine in energy drinks like in terms of the effect it has on the heart?

A

The caffeine in energy drinks is like using cocaine in terms of the effect on the heart and its efficiently or inefficiently

18
Q

How did Rory die?

A

Sudden Cardiac Death

19
Q

Is Rory predisposed to suffer from discomfort?

A

Rory is predisposed to feeling some discomfort if engaged w/ extreme physical activity, however it was the inappropiate ingestion of Slamanaid in a short time frame and then conducting extreme physical activity in the heat that caused the death of Rory.

20
Q

Do you believe that Rory could have died solely of his condition?

A

In my expert opinion, I can say with a degree of medical certainty that even with the HOCM condition w/out the ingestion of Slamanaid, Rory would not have died solely of from the physical activity he engaged
