Drainage System +waterfall Flashcards
What are the meaning for these words:
Source
The start of a river
Mouth
When river meets sea
Confluence
The point where two rivers meet
Tributaries
When a Sam stream/river joins the main river
Watershed
Imagery line that surrounds a drainage system
What are the meanings of these words:
Groundwaterflow
Movement of the water downhill underground through rocks before entering river
Through flow
Movement of water downhill through the soil before entering river
Surface storage
Where water is held in lakes
Evaprotranspiration
Where water is evaporated from plants from the sun
Interception
When water is caught, collected and stored by plants and vegetation
Surface runoff
All water flow along surface of land which would eventually flow to river
Infilltration
Water soaks from tops of ground into soil
Precipitation
Water enters the system as hail, snow or rain
Evaporation
When water leave the system and goes back to clouds from lakes/rivers
Soil moisture storage
Where water gets kept or stored into the rock
Percolation
Where water moves down from the soil into rocks
River discharge
Water leaving the drainage system through the river
What’s the difference between impermeable and permeable
Permeable allows water to pass through while impermeable doesn’t allow water to pass through
Name the four types of erosion?
Attrition, solution, abrasion and hydraulic action
Name the four types of transportation
Solution, saltation, traction and suspension
What are the meaning of the four types of erosions
Attrition is rocks hitting each other,
Abrasion is rocks grinding against riverbed
Solution is beds and banks being dissolved in weaker acids in water
And hydraulic action is the force of the water being force into the banks and forcing air into crack causing it to widen therefore causing it collapse
Meanings of the four types of transportation
Traction is larger fragments rolling along river bed
Saltation is large fragments bouncing along river bed
Suspension is smaller fragments carried in the follow of the river
Solution is dissolved minerals carried in river
What is deposition
When river doesn’t have energy to transport the material and drop its off
How is waterfall formed
Waterfall are found when hard rock is found over soft rock. As soft rock erodes away faster then hard a step develops and created a plunge pool. The force of hydraulic action and abrasion into the plunge oil causes undercutting of the hard rock and create and overhang. Overtime the overhang collapses and the waterfall retreats slowly upstream leaving behind a gorge
Describe how a bed load changes with distance from source
Bedload size decreased changes the farther away you are from the source as it gets eroded down
What’s the difference between impermeable and permeable
Impermeable means water cannot pass through but water can pass through permeable
