Drainage basins stores and transfers Flashcards
What is a drainage basin
A catchment area
Area that supplies the river with its supply of water
Open system
Forms a cascading system
Input into a drainage basin
Precipitation
Outputs of a drainage basin
Evaporation - moisture lost through solar radiation
Transpiration - water lost from upper regions of plants in the catchment area
Groundwater
Water stored below the water table in saturated soil
Soil water
Water stored above the water table
Interception
Rain falling on vegetation stopping it from reaching the river
Surface water
Water in lakes
Channel flow
Precipitation entering the river
Stem flow
Water reaches the ground by flowing down trunks and stems
Infiltration
Passage of water into the soil
Overland flow
Ground is too saturated
Becomes impermeable to new water
(esp. urban areas)
