Temporary storage, as water is captured by plants, buildings and hard surfaces before reaching the soil.
What is vegetation storage?
Any moisture taken up by vegetation and held up in plants.
What is surface storage?
Any surface water on lakes, ponds, and puddles.
What is soil moisture?
Water held within soil.
What is groundwater storage?
Water held within permeable rocks (aquifer)
What is channel storage?
Water held in rivers and streams.
What is infiltration?
Water entering topsoil. Most common during slow or steady rainfall.
What is stemflow?
Water flowing through plant stems or drainpipes
What is baseflow also known as?
Groundwater flow
What is channel flow?
The volume of water flowing within a river channel
What is surface runoff?
Water flows over the surface during an intense storm or when the ground is frozen.
