Drainage Basin Hydrological Cycle Flashcards
What is soil water storage?
Water held within the soil
What is vegetation storage?
Water held within vegetation (within the vegetation and also trapped by root systems) and on the surface of vegetation.
What is transpiration?
Loss of water from vegetation through the surface of leaves.
What is infiltration?
Absorption of water into the soil, not from direct rainfall.
What is interception?
Precipitations prevented from reaching the surface by leaves, stems and branches of vegetation.
What is stem flow?
Water that runs down the stems and branches of plants and trees during and after precipitation in order that it can reach the ground surface from the leaves and. (It occurs after interception)
What is precipitation?
Water in any form which falls from the atmosphere to the surface of the earth. It includes rainfall, snow, sleet and hail.
What is groundwater flow?
Movement of water through rocks horizontally.
What is channel storage?
Water held as a store in a river/stream.
What is groundwater storage?
Water storage in rocks or deep soil.
What is surface runoff?
Water runs off the surface of the ground to eventually reach the river.
What is channel flow?
Run off of surface water within a well-defined channel.
What is through-flow?
The movement of water down-slope towards rivers within the soil.
What is surface storage?
Any water stored on the surface of the ground:
e.g. a lake
What is river runoff?
Water leaving the drainage basin system.
