Functions:

  • Tonifies the spleen
  • Drains damp and harmful body fluids by promoting urination and

Actions:

  • Edema (w/ scanty urination)
  • Poor appetite, fatigue and loose stool due to spleen Qi deficiency
  • Insomnia due to heart Shen disturbance
  • Strengthens Spleen and transforms phlegm palpitations, headache and dizziness

Pattern:

  • Abdominal: Water splash below left subcostal region
  • Tongue: The “Fu Ling tongue”, enlarged with tooth markets and moist coat
  • Dosage: 9-15g
  • CCI: Instances of sinking Spleen Qi or Yin deficiency and in deficiency cold w/ loss of fluids.
  • HDI: Diuretics
  • Related Herbs: Chi Fu Ling: Drains damp and clears heat, Fu Shen: Calms Shen, Fu Ling Pi (Bark): Used for skin edema.
