Q

How is Lanyon affected by discovering Jekyll’s secret?
Why does the discovery have this effect on him?

A

Lanyon is both physically and mentally changed when he discovers Jekyll’s secret. He is “pale”, he has lost weight, and he looks as though he has a “deep-seated terror of the mind”. The shock eventually results in his death. Lanyon is so affected by the discovery because it has undermined everything he believed in up to this point — his views of traditional science have been turned upside down.

Q

Lanyon is initially described as “hearty” and “healthy”.
Why does the discovery have this effect on him?

A

Stevenson’s initial description of Lanyon as being “hearty” and “healthy” makes him seem full of life. This makes Lanyon’s death seem more shocking. The reader is left wondering what can be so shocking that it causes such a healthy man to become so ill.
