Downing: Adrenal and Pancreas Histology Flashcards
What is the adrenal cortex derived from?
Mesoderm
What is the medulla derived from?
NCC
What innervates the adrenal glands?
SNS
*majority of fibers end in the medulla on medullary cells
What are the three layers of the cortex?
Zona G
Zona F
Zona R
What does the Zona G produce?
Mineralocorticoids:
Aldosterone
Deoxycorticosterone
Where is the Zona G located?
Outer, narrow zone
What is the broadest zone of hte cortex?
Zona F
What does the Zona F produce?
Glucocortiocids:
Cortisol
Hydrocortisone
(some androgens)
What does the Zona R produce?
Sex Steroid production (androgens)
What type of cells make up the medulla?
Chromaffin cells
Ganglion cells
What hormones are STORED in the medulla?
Epi and NE
What is Chromogranin?
ATP and soluble proteins that can sequester catecholamines into vesicles
What is the origin of chromaffin cells?
NCC
What are chromaffin cells innervated by?
PREgang SNS
*secrete directly into capillaries
What gives rise to pheochromocytomas?
Chromaffin cells
