Double Physics Flashcards
What are the 4 non-renewable energy sources
Oil
Ga
Nuclear
Coal
What are the renewable energy sources
Wind
Solar
Biomass
Hydro
Wave
Tidal
Geothermal
Advantages of non renewable energy
Cheap
Reliable (already set up)
Easy to transport
Efficient
Disadvantages of non renewable energy
Releases Green House gases (Co2, So2) - causes global warming
Finite resource (non- renewable)
Advantages of renewable energy
We can make more
They are clean energy and no co2 releced
Disadvantages of renewable energy
Low efficiency
High cost
Unreliable
Name 2 greenhouse gases
CO2 and SO2
What is the effect of greenhouse gases on the environment
Causes global warming
Explain how a thermal power station works
1) chemical, heat, kinetic, electrical
Steps:
Step 1: burn fossil fuels used to boil water and creates steam
Step 2: the steam turns the turbines that is connected to a generator which creates electricity
What is a step up transformer and why is it important
A step up transformer increases the voltage and reduces the current it’s important because it reduces heat loss
What is the national grid
The national grid is a system of cables pylons and transformers that covers the UKs providing us with electricity.
Give 2 advantages of the national grid
Reliable
Helps keep up with changing demand
What does a step down transformer do and why
A step down transformer decreases the voltage and makes it safe for homes and industries
Describe how the demand in electricity changes through the day
In the morning the electricity is low in demand however during the afternoon the demand for electricity is high because everyone has left school and work and in the night it’s low because everyone is asleep
What is global warming
Global warming is the increase of the earths average temperature
