Physical Health
Relates to the efficient functioning of the body and it’s systems. Includes one’s physical capability to perform daily tasks and physical fitness.
Definition of Health?
A state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Mental Health
A state of well being in which an individual is able to:
• recognise his/her own abilities
• cope with the normal stresses of life
• can work fruitfully and productively
• can contribute to his/her own community
Social Health
An individual’s ability to interact with others and participate in his or her own community in both an independent and cooperative way.
Stages of Lifespan?
- Prenatal (conception/birth)
- infant (0-18months)
- toddlerhood (18 months - 3years)
- childhood (3-6)
- childhood (6-12)
- youth (12-18)
- early adulthood (18-39)
- middle adulthood (39-64)
- late adulthood (64 years +)
Prenatal

- 40-week-long period of time

- begins at birth
- growth is rapid
Toddlerhood

- 18 months - 3 years
- social interaction begins through use of words and imitation of gestures
- infant learns to eat, walk, crawl, form noises then words
Childhood (1)

- 3-6 years
- growth slows down and is at a steady rate
- vocabulary increases
- behaviour learnt is increasingly appropriate for the different situations they experience
Childhood (2)

- 6-12 years
- vocabulary increases
- social interaction increases through use of more sophisticated language and expression
- child learns basic physical, emotional, social and intellectual skills that continue to refine throughout this stage of life span
Youth

- 12-18 years
- stage from late childhood to full maturity
- physical and sexual maturity are achieved
- social interaction shifts from family to peers
- search for personal identity becomes important
Early adulthood

- 18-39
- possible establishment of new family
- expected to support themselves financially
- role models for younger generations
Middle adulthood
- 39-64 years
- decline in muscle strength and sensory organs can occur
- possible career changes
- family changes may include children moving out of home
Late adulthood
LAL
- 64 years +
- adjusting to retirement
- coping with possible decline in quality of health
- loss of memory
- loss of spouse and changes to family (eg grandchildren)

- having a healthy body weight
- ability to resist illness/disease
