Parenteral Dosage
bypass gastric system. injection/infusion
Intramuscular (PD)
lag time before the drug reaches blood circulation due to erratic drug absorption through the muscle tissue
Intradermal (PD)
into skin
Epidural (PD)
injected into the dura mater or epidural space of the spinal cord
Intraocular (PD)
into eye
Intrathecal (PD)
injected into the space surrounding the spinal cord
Intravenous IV (PD)
injected directly into the vein allowing immediate absorption
IV push—a one-time, rapid injection
IV piggyback—a secondary IV medication injected alongside a primary medication
IV infusion/drip—a bag and pump are used to control the administration rate
Subcutaneous (PD)
injected into the fatty tissue under the skin. takes longer to absorb through the fatty tissue to reach the blood circulation
Topical Dosage
applied on the surface of the skin or mucous membranes
Powder (TD)
applied directly to the affected area of skin to treat local skin conditions
Cream (TD)
mixed in approximately equal proportions of oil and water
Ointment (TD)
contain a higher proportion of oil than water; more viscous than creams
Lotion (TD)
oil mixed with water; less viscous than creams and ointments
Gel (TD)
emulsion in which the drug is mixed with an alcohol or water base
