Capsules that allow slow release along the GIT
What are the advantages of the oral route?
Convenient, cheap, allows slow release
What are the disadvantages of the oral route?
Unsuitable in emergencies, gastric irritation, not absorbed after administration, delayed absorption
What is the sublingual route advantages?
Rapid effect, can be terminated by spitting tablet
What are the disadvantages of the sublingual route?
irritant to mucous membranes, only suitable for few drugs
What are characteristics of parental injections?
sterile, suitable pH and osmotic pressure
What are the advantages of IV?
immediate effect, allows rapid dose modification
What are disadvantages of IV?
Infection, local venous thrombosis
