What is the difference between dispersion and flocculation?
Floculants settle fast but less prone to compaction and break up easily.
Dispersion settles as a cake, irreversible, difficult to break up.
Newtonian flow
Water flows in proportion to force. Linear slope.
Plastic
Liquid does not flow proportional to force initially then catches up ( ketchup) shear thinning
Pseudoplastic
Takes more force than plastic to flow, eventually catches up
Dilatant
High solids content. Becomes thicker with stress shear thickening
3 types of non Newtonian flow
Plastic
Pseudo plastic
Dilatant
Thixotropy
Ability of a system that was disturbed by shear stress to return to it’s undisturbed structure. Keeps particles from sinking too quickly but need plastic or pseudo plastic properties for good flow.
Wetting
A surface active agent added to reduce the surface tension Water enters the pore and displaces the air. Same as surfactant in emulsions.
What are the 3 steps in order to prepare a suspension?
Reduce particle size
Wetting
Addition of dispersion medium and uniformity is established.
