DOS-Research & Inquiry Flashcards
What are the ways of knowing?
- Tradition
- Authority
- Trail and Error
- Expereince, Intution
- Logical reseasoning/Scientific method
- research
Historical Perspectives:
Scientific Approach to Development of Knowledge is characterized by?
ORDER: inquiry conducted following a logical series of steps according to a pre-specified plan.
CONTROL: some aspect to what we are studying to minimize error/ bias, which threaten our conclusions/ valdiity
EMPIRICISM: facts are gounded in objective reality
GENERALIZATION: Gain knowledge that is transportable from specific situation to the general.
What is Qualitative Research?
Concerned primarily with PROCESS (how), rather than outcomes or products. Interested in meaning and meaning making - how ppl make sense of their lives ad experiences.
Define nursing research?
Research: systematic, logical, and empirical inquiry into a phenomenon to produce verifiable knowledge. ( qualitative & quantitative)
What is the purpose of research?
Purpose: to improve practice and health outcomes of patients
Define Evidence Formed Decision Making?
Evidence-informed decision making: is a continous interactive process involving the explicit, conscientious and judicious consideration of the best available evidence to provide.
In evidence based practice research use allows nurses to do what?
. Value research to developing knowledge for nursing.
. Have the ability to find relevant research
. Have knowledge of sound research practices
. Have the ability to critically evaluate research findings
What is the nurses role in research?
- Consumer/decision-maker
- Change Champion
- Participant/Subject
- Investigators/producers
According to the CNO what is the nurses role in research?
review research in nursing and health related disciplines, critically evaluate research findings, and use findings to inform practice
According to the CNA what is the nurses role in research?
All nurses will …participate in research, read, and apply research findings
Name thedirections or research in nursing.
- Community Research
- International Research
- Programs of Reseach
- Interventions Studys
What are the philosophys research paradigms?
Quantitative: Empirical Analytic /Positivist/Received
Qualitative: Naturalistic/ Perceived
What are the steps involved in comprehension/understanding research?
- Preliminary reading: skim abstract/article. may decide to stop reading
- Comprehensive understanding:understand authors intent, review unfamilar terms, terms in relation to context
- Analysis understanding:Understand parts, critique soundness
- Synthesis: put togeher and make sense
What 3 questions does critical appraisal help you answer?
- What are the study results?
- Are they valid, i.e. were they obtained by sound scientific methods? (big part of course)
- Will the results help me in my practice, i.e., clinical significant & useful, generalizable to my patient population?
When is a research study conducted?
When you have a….
- problem/situation in need of solution
- problem/situation arises and we are uncertain about a phenomenon i.e. dont have adaquate info or enough understanding to know what to do.
- indications of lack/gap of knowledge
