Dormancy & Dispersal Flashcards
1
Q
Give examples of clonal dispersal.
A
- New saplings grow from roots e.g. bracken
- Runners (guerilla strategy) e.g. strawberries
- Plants grow in close proximity with strong intraspecific competition (phalanx strategy) e.g. bamboo.
2
Q
Define tidal and diurnal migration.
A
Tidal - Move with tide to keep in same environment.
Diurnal - Need two different habitats.
3
Q
Define predictive dormancy.
A
- Initiated by adverse weather conditions
- Predictable and seasonal.
- e.g. diapause & innate/primary dormancy.
4
Q
Define consequential dormancy.
A
- Initiated by adverse weather conditions
- Consequential.
5
Q
Define innate dormancy,
A
Condition of seeds when they leave the parent plant. Will leave dormancy when exposed to warm moist areas.
6
Q
Define enforced dormancy.
A
Occurs when a seed is deprived of any/all its germination requirements.
7
Q
Define induced dormancy.
A
Changes in environment induce changes within the seed resulting in dormancy.
