dorians relationship with ither chracaters Flashcards
basil and dorian’s relationship is superficial : basil seeing in the young boy his new inspiration. dorians beauty and innocence made him basils new kuse
“he is all my art to me now” this creates the impression that dorian is larger than life
“it is quite true that i have worshipped you with far more romance of feeling than a man usually gives to a friend. somehow, i had never loved a woman. i supposed i never had the time”
basil “takes” dorian and sets him into his own canvas. basil finally feels his triumph and, like a married woman, brands him by giving his own “name in long vermillion letters”
besides hedonistic philosophy, lord henry infuses dorian with the idea that youth and beauty are the most important factors in life
lord henry teaches him that people who would not follow their feelings, impulses or dreams lived in self denial and felt trapped, and thereby he proposes that the only way to not have unbecoming body temptations is to yield them
lord henry’s interest in their relationship is based on his curiosity to see how much he can control dorian’s life
the first time dorian is critical towards lord henry is after dorian feels fear of his sins coming back to him.
“you would sacrifice anybody, henry, for the sake of an epigram” the development of moral conscience in dorian shows his regret for living a life without any though of someone else’s wellbeing
lord henry’s corruption also involves misogyny and sexism
“my dear boy, no woman is a genius: women are a decorative sex. they never have anything to say, but they say it charmingly. they represent the triumph of matter over mind, just as we men represent the triumph of mind over morals”
dorian sees sibyl not as a human being but as a form of art that he likes to watch and be amazed by its beauty
james vanes desire for avenging his sister haunts dorian’s for years. his death puts dorian in a short lived panic
james vane is portrayed as one who only wants the best for his sister. he’s a character of justice and good nature, ironically misguiding him from killing dorian as he believes that dorian would look much older by now
james hunting dorian symbolizes dorian’s realization that destruction can work both ways: if he destroys someone, he can’t expect any less fro himself
