Dopamine Mechanism Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 4 key pathways affected by dopamine in the brain?
A
- Mesocortical
- Mesolimbic
- Nigrostriatal
- Tuberoinfundibular
2
Q
Describe the mesocortical pathway
A
- Projects from ventral tegmentum (brainstem) to cortex
- Where the negative symptoms come from
- Too little dopamine
3
Q
Describe the mesolimbic pathway
A
- Projects from ventral tegmentum (brainstem) to limbic system
- Where the positive symptoms come from
- Too much dopamine
4
Q
Describe the nigrostriatal pathway
A
- Projects from dopaminergic cell bodies in the substantia nigra to the basal ganglia
- Suppresses acutely choline activity
- Can cause Parkinsonian movements
5
Q
Describe the tuberoinfundibular pathway
A
- Projects from hypothalamus to anterior pituitary
- Blocking dopamine in this pathway will predispose the patient to hyperprolactinaemia (decreased libido, menstrual dysfunction etc.)
6
Q
What is olanzipine?
A
Atypical antipsychotic
7
Q
What are the side effects of olanzipine?
A
- Weight gain
- High fats and sugar
- Hyperprolactinaemia
- May cause abnormal LFTs
