Age requirements
18 years or more. 16 or 17 with written consent of a parent or guardian
Weight requirements
> 110 lb can donate full-volume units.
Donors <110 lb can donate low-volume units. The unit must be labeled as low-volume. If the donation volume is <300ml the anticoagulant amount must be adjusted.
Pulse requirements
Regular and between 50-100 bpm.
<50 bpm may be acceptable for athletes
Pregnancy requirements
Donation is allowed 6 weeks after the conclusion of pregnancy.
Blood pressure requirements
Systolic bp must be 90-180 mm Hg
Diastolic bp must be 50-100 mm Hg
Frequency of Whole blood donation
> 8 weeks min
Frequency of 2 unit RBC by apheresis
> 16 weeks min
Plasmapheresis (occasional)
Every 4 weeks. Plasmapheresis returns donor RBCs.
Plasmapheresis (serial)
every 48 hours with additional restrictions.
Platelet apheresis
every 2 days but no more than twice a week or 24 times per year if the donor donates a single platelet unit and gets their RBCs back.
Purpose of Donor qualifications
To protect both the recipient and the donor
Donor temperature
cannot be <37.5 C or <99.5 F
Donor Hgb/ Hct
> 12.5 g/dl for women
13.0 g/dl for men
38% women
39% men
Autologous donor requirements of hgb/ hct
11.0 g/dl and or 33%
Purpose of the donor questionnaire
Asks about travel, medications, risky behavior, jaundice
Donation deferral for 12 months after receipt of blood products
Due to possible exposure to infectious agents such as HepB, HIV, West nile, etc.
Drug therapy deferral list
temporary times and drugs
-Aspirin 2 day deferral for single unit of platelet
-1 month deferral for Propecia, Acutane, Proscar
- 6 month deferral for Avodart
-Soriatane deferral for 3 years
- Temporary deferral for antibiotics due to possible infection
- Clopidogrel (Plavix) deferral for 14 days after last dose
- Warfarin or Heparin deferral for 7 days after last dose.
