I’ve never had blood pressure problems due to the amount of salt that I tend to consume, but most people don’t start having high blood pressure from too much sodium until they’re in their early 50’s. NEXT SLIDE

NEED: “A slice of bread can have 250 milligrams of sodium alone. Unless you get back to a diet where you’re really cooking from scratch, and not using processed foods or canned foods, it’s really hard to reach that recommendation”. (Dunbar, 2012)

Q

This is not to say that salt is bad for us, just an excess amount. Salt does good things for our body too and is “required for metabolic functions in the body and helps regulate fluid volume”. (DiPaola, 2012) NEXT SLIDE

SOLUTION: The solution I think we should start with would be reading labels; at the grocery store, when going through the drive-through, and at restaurants. Another solution- just being educated about what salt does to your body and the long-term effects it can have.

Q

Draining and rinsing your vegetables before eating them can reduce up to 40% of the sodium. (How to Reduce Sodium, 2017) Something else important to keep in mind is that potassium offsets the effects of sodium and can help lower blood pressure.

Q

Because salt is one of my favorite ingredients in the world, I started reducing my sodium by not adding table salt to things that already had salt in them. There would be days I went to bed after eating something high in sodium and woke up with swollen fingers.

Q

Some people worry that if they stop adding or buying salty foods, that their food will be bland. Well there are many salt substitutes that can be used instead, such as potassium or other spices that aren’t high in sodium. There are many products you can get that are low sodium or no sodium at all.

Q

Other people will wonder why they should slow down on consuming it because it isn’t supposed to affect them until they’re 50, as far as blood pressure goes… well according to Womenshealthmag.com, salt can make you bloated, considering it retains excess fluids, it can also be as addictive as cocaine or nicotine, and therefore you will want it more and more. Q

As I’ve said before, excess salt causes hypertension (AKA high blood pressure). Too much salt can also lead to water retention. Because eating salt makes you thirsty, you tend to drink a lot of water. But not many people know that salt causes you to retain water but your body can only retain so much of it before it puts too much pressure on your circulatory system which can lead to heart disease.
