Domestication Flashcards
Domestication
domestication syndrome
Phenotypic traits typical of domesticated species i.e not found in the wild species
ex of domestication syndrome #1 non-behavioural
reduced brain size, reproductive cycle changes (e.g., more breeding cycles) different colouration patterns
ex of domestication syndrome #2
behavioural
tameness/ docility
Who proposed domestication syndrome: effects on the phenotype?
Fuller (1986)
overall effects of domestication can impact any dimension of the phenotype? define Chemophenes:
changes in molecules with synthesis regulated by genes (biochemistry)
overall effects of domestication can impact any dimension of the phenotype? define somatophenes
changes in internal and external body forms (i.e morphology and anatomy)
overall effects of domestication can impact any dimension of the phenotype? define physiophenes
changes in physiological systems (immune, nervous, endocrine, etc)
overall effects of domestication can impact any dimension of the phenotype? define EHTOPHENES
changes in patterns of behaviour, overt, observable actions
overall effects of domestication can impact any dimension of the phenotype? define psychophenes
changes in internal processes: cognitions, emotions
Domestication Theories I: Pathways
3
commensal, prey and directed
define commensal pathway
initiated by the animal, subordinates at least. Dogs, cats, chickens , muscovy ducks, pigs
define prey pathways
initiated by humans. sheep, goats, cattle. former preys are round up
define directed pathway
initiated by humans for the explicit purpose of domestication. i.e selected breeding (artificial selection)
domestication theories II: NCT ?
