What was the law on marital rape?
Up until 1991 marital rape was legal#
the law rape within marriage was introduced
75% of rapes take place in the home
Most raped have low conviction rates
Only around 7% are reported and few of them are criminally convicted
This is mostly due to a lack of evidence = dark figure of crime
What is the sociological explanation of domestic violence?
Radical feminists blame the patriarchy as men exert their power and dominate onto women as his authority has been threatened

Dobash and Dobash found that marriage gives men the authority and right to control their wives by beating them.
What do Marxist feminists argue?
They blame capitalism and the patriarchy
C takes away men’s dignity as they experience alienation at work

They take out their frustrations on their wives so they become ‘takers of shit’ and absorb their husband’s anger.
