3 core cables
A
Appliances connected to mains by 3 core cable (3 wires - copper core, coloured insulation).
Live: Brown - carries alternating p.d. from supply 230V - dangerous even when switch is open - body provides link between supply & earth. Connection to earth creates low resistance path to earth, huge current could -> fire
Neutral: Blue - completes circuit, p.d 0V
Earth: Green, Yellow - safety (stops appliance from becoming live), p.d 0V. Only carries current if there is a fault
