Q

What did Mary Boulton discover? (1983)

in over 80% of families she studied, wives took main responsibility of children, taking time off work if they felt ill

Q

What does research by Craig (2007) show?

A

women do between 1/3 - 1/2 more housework than men
inequality begins when couple moves in together, calls this ‘partnership penalty’ where women are penalised eg domestic chores
when having children, men see it as their job to get woman pregnant then she is penalised with ‘mother penalty’ raising the child–> impacts career eg glass ceiling
leads to ‘chore wars’

Q

What did Edgell find out about decision making?

A

allocates decision making in the nuclear family to 3 broad categories:
-very important decisions eg finance/moving, made by husband alone or jointly but with husband having final say
-important decisions eg holiday location, normally taken jointly or rarely by woman alone, man sees this as project
-less important decisions eg food shop, made exclusively by woman
