Domestic Electricity Flashcards
What is direct current
Constant voltage, always flows in one direction, battery
What is alternating current
Voltage changes between positive/negative, changes direction, mains supply
National grid
System of cables + transformer that link power stations and consumers
Step-up transformers
Increase voltage (potential difference), lowers current
Step-down transformers
Decreases voltage (potential difference), higher current
What voltage is the earth wire
0v
What voltage is the live wire
230v
What voltage is the neutral wire
0v
What colour is the neutral wire
Blue
What colour is the earth wire
Green + yellow
What colour is the live wire
Brown
Outer insulation:
All wires bundled together with extra plastic insulation
Cable grip
Holds tightly so that wires don’t become loose
Live wire
Current enters device
Fuse
Thin wire that melts if the current gets too high (breaks circuit)
