Brown - live wire which carries a potential difference of 230V. It provides the alternating potential difference from the mains supply

Green and yellow - earth wire which has no potential difference and only carries current when there is a fault. It is a safety wire to stop the appliance becoming live.

Blue - neutral wire which has close to earth potential difference and completes the circuit by carrying current away from the appliance.
