Parsons.
What does Parsons say about the DoL?
Women- expressive role; household duties, childcare, primary socialisation, ‘nurturers’.
Men- Instrumental role; ‘provider’, breadwinner.
Who criticises Parson’s theory?
Bott- the DoL changed.
What does Bott argue there is more of?
Joint and segregated conjugal roles- roles within marriage such as work, household and childcare.
Segregated conjugal roles?
Couple has separate roles e.g women take care of childcare and men do the breadwinning.
Joint conjugal roles?
Couples share the roles in the household e.g leisure activities are together, household etc.
Who else argues against Parsons?
Willmott and Young- men have started to take more roles in the house, wives are becoming wage earners.
Feminists- DoL only benefits men.
