what is domestic labour?
housework, childcare, and emotional work
what factors have influenced the the gender roles within family past and present?
female dependency on men, life expectancy increasing, family size decreasing, female employment
what is a symmetrical family?
when a couple share the roles equally
what is the pre-industrial family?
the family works as a unit of economic production, no separation between work and home, family live with or are close to other families.
what is the early industrial family?
men go out to work so home and work are separate. women perform a domestic role. pre-industrial families separate due to the roles they do
what is the asymmetrical family?
Wilmott and young suggested that family would become asymmetrical. men spen more time outside of the home without partners. this stage didn’t occur
what is an instrumental role?
the husbands role, breadwinner i.e., achieving success at work
what is the expressive role?
housewife, looking after the house
what are two criticisms of parsons?
men are becoming more involved in domestic duties, more women are choosing a career instead of becoming a housewife
what are segregated conjugal roles?
very traditional, jobs are not shared
what are joint conjugal roles?
husband and wife both share responsibility for paid work, childcare and domestic chores.
what is meant by the march of progress view?
segregated conjugal roles (gender roles) and an optimistic view
characteristics of a symmetrical family
equal division of labour in the home, outside the home, power making decisions
what social changes have encouraged the rise of symmetrical family?
changes in women’s positions, geographical mobility, new technology, higher standards of living
what is emotion work?
responsible for managing emotions and feelings of family members
