View of domestic violence
People see domestic violence as a behaviour from a few sick individuals however sociologists have changed this view
- domestic violence is far to widespread to be simply the work of a few disturbed individuals (women’s aid federation) domestic abuse accounts to 1/6 - 1/4 of all reported crime
- domestic abuse does not occur randomly it is more common in certain societies and is mostly men abusing woman and follows a patter
Coleman found women are more likely to have experienced the four types of abuse than men
Case studies domestic violence
🔸Dobash and dobash found that violent incidents could occur because a husband could get set of by what a husband saw as a challenge to his authority eg women questioning why he is late
Women more likely to have experienced domestic violence facts
- British crime survey 7.3% 👰🏻 experienced domestic violence and 5️⃣% males
- Ansara and Hindin found that women suffered more severe violence and had greater physiological effects and were more likely than men to be fearful of their partner 🙍👱🏻
- Dar points out that it can also be difficult to count seperate domestic violence incidents because it may be continuous or may occur too often
- Yearnshire women on average suffer 35 assaults before reporting
- Dar argues this is because they think it is not serious enough and isn’t a matter of the police and may be scared of their partner
- police may be reluctant to record, investigate
