Domain Name System Flashcards
Authoritative Server
The authoritative nameserver is the last stop in the nameserver query. If the authoritative name server has access to the requested record, it will return the IP address
Recursive DNS Server
Makes requests until it reaches the authoritative server
Fast Flux DNS
Rapidly changes IP address associated with one domain
TLD
Last portion of the hostname: e.g .com
Hostname
A hostname is a unique label assigned to a device connected to a computer network
Nameserver
Root nameserver - The root server is the first step in translating (resolving) human-readable host names into IP addresses.
Recursive query
A recursive query tells the querying DNS server or resolve that it should provide an answer or start a recursive process
Iterative query
Provides a referral to other DNS servers
Non-recursive query
The DNS server will proceed to return the answers from its own local cache or database.
A record
The A record maps the requested hostname to the corresponding IPv4 address
AAAA record
The AAAA record is similar to an A record, however, it works with IPv6 addresses
Cname
Also known as Canonical Name record, the CNAME record is used as an alias to another hostname
SOA
Short for Start of Authority, the SOA record serves as an administrative record for a domain name zone.
SRV
Identifies locations for other protocols
PTR Record
Short for Reverse-lookup Pointer, the PTR record is used to map a reverse mapping from an IP to a fully qualified hostname.
