shoulder and rotator cuff injuries
modifications are often needed for overhead movements such as limiting ROM and adjusting shoulder position to help prevent impingement and further injury. in general exercises with elbows are bent are prefered over straight arm exercises.
elbow tendinitis
high rep exercises (15-20 reps) involving the elbow and wrist should be avoided. exercises should begin with low weight and reps gradually progress.
greater trochanteric bursitis
inflammation of the trochanteric bursa, a part of the hip. avoid side lying positions, as well as squats and lunges.
iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS)
commone overuse injury of the tissues located on the outer thigh and knee. clients with ITBS should return slowly to activity with an exercise program that helps to regain flexibilty and strength at the hip and lateral thigh.
patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS)
pain in the anterior of the knee orignination from the contact of the posterior surface of the patella with the femur.
infrapatellar tendinitis
inflammation of the pattellar tendon connecting the kneecap to ths shinbone AKA jumpers knee
ankle sprains
a person can usually resume exercise activity in 1-2 weeks grade I sprain 4-8 weeks grade II sprain 12-16 weeks grade III sprain
achillies tendinitis
inflammation of the achillies tendon. controlled eccentric exercises for the calf comples can help relieve symptoms
inflammatory phase
imobilizes the injured area, blood flow is increased to bring oxygen and nutrients to repair damaged tissue. this phase can last up to 6 days
fibroblastic/proliferation phase
injured area fills with collage and other cells which will eventually form a scar. this pahse starts around day 3 and lasts until aprox. day 21.
maturation/remodeling phase
final phase begins around day 21 by remodeling the scar, bone or tissue that was injured. this phase can last for 2 years.
RICE
should be used immediatley after musculoskelata injuries such as sprains, strains, bruises and other soft tissue injuries. Rest Ice Compresson Elevation
pre-existing injury
thourough medical history and assessment is recomended for these clients to make sure if it is appropriate for them to exercise. *modified exercise programs are appropriate for localized injuries
