One-way communication
What is half-duplex
communication sends or receives at one time only
what is full-duplex
communication sends and receives simultaneously
what is baseband
networks that have one channel and can only send one signal at a time
what is broadband
networks that have multiple channels and can send and receive multiple signal at a time
what is circuit switching
a dedicated communications channel through the network which guarantees the full bandwidth
what is packet switching
data is sent in packets but take multiple different paths to the destination
what is QoS
quality of service. It gives specific traffic priority over other traffic. E.g. VOIP or other UDP traffic needing closer to real time communication
what is PAN
personal area network. Communications among computers that are close together
what is LAN
local area network. Communications among computers and devices in a limited geographical area
what is MAN
metropolitan area network. A large computer network that spans a city or large campus
what is WAN
Wide area network. A network covering a large area such as a city, country, or intercontinental distances.
what is GAN
global area network. Network used for supporting mobile users across a number of wirelesss LANs, satellite coverage areas. Switching between networks is seamless for the user
what is VPN
virtual private network. Sends private data over an insecure network/internet
what is the OSI model
Open system interconnect: a layered network model that standardises the communication functions of a telecommunication or computing system regardless of their underlying internal structure and technology
