Doll's house Flashcards
What does the quote ‘‘But where was Mr. Kelvey? Nobody knew for certain. But everybody said he was in prison.’’
The narrator never clarifies whether or not the father is actually in prison but the villagers repeat the gossip regardless. Like in the school, there is little room for compassion.
Presently our Else nudged up close to her sister. But now she had forgotten the cross lady. She put out a finger and stroked her sister’s quill; she smiled her rare smile. “I seen the little lamp,” she said, softly. Then both were silent once more.
In the only line she speaks, Else declares that she saw the little lamp that Kezia, too, loves. That each girl notices the lamp suggests they share similar natures and innocence despite their obvious class differences. As the youngest characters, neither has succumbed to the prejudices that surround them, and are instead able to appreciate the small beauties and joys of the world.
