What does Accreditation mean?
A school recognized by an outside agency, that the student has qualified grades for professional practice.
What does Licensure mean?
It grants authority for individuals to work in a certain profession, in a particular state.
What does registration mean?
A student has graduated from an accredited school and passed a standard national exam administered by a nongovernmental agency.
What does certification mean?
A health care worker that meets the requirements from the certifying organization to show they can complete their job.
What does a career ladder mean?
A person who needs more education or training to move from a lower career to a higher career.
What are therapeutic services?
Provide treatment for patients or animals, who help clients to maintain or improve their health over time.
What are diagnostic services?
Careers that determine the presence, absence, or extent of a disease and provide data on the effectiveness of treatment.
What is biotechnology?
The manipulation of genetic material in living organisms, or parts of organisms to make products and services.
What are support services?
Provide care for patients directly or indirectly.
Physicians
Examine patients, diagnose medical problems; and treat illnesses and injuries.
Physicians Assistant
Provide primary care in places where physicians are in short supply. Work under the supervision of physicians, but still have a lot of independence.
Medical Assistant
Handle general office duties such as scheduling procedures, and out insurance forms.
Surgical Technologist
Helps prep the patient before surgery and/or helps them after a procedure in the operating room.
Physical Therapist
Helps people who are injured from a sport or an activity involving physical movement. Main goals: restore function, relieve pain, and prevent further injuries.
Physical Therapist Assistant
Work one on one with the patient doing rehab under PT. Implement a plan made by the PT, and it requires an associate’s degree.
Occupational Therapist
Help those who are disabled to preform everyday tasks; assess +prepare intervention plan. (Helps with grabbing a pencil, putting food to your mouth, “if, then” situations.
Occupational Therapist Assistant
Works DIRECTLY supervised by an occupational therapist. Tasks: carry out the intervention plan, work directly with the patients, contribute to the plan, participate at every stage of OT, and administer tests.
Orthotist/Prosthetists
They use computers, along with the patients needs to design a prosthetic limb or device to help someone maneuver like normal.
Respiratory Therapist
Assesses, treats, and cares for patients with breathing and other cardiopulmonary disorders.
Paramedic
Care for people in emergency situations, who are not in the hospital or medical facility. They help treat a patient as best as possible on their way to the hospital.
EMT (Emergency Medical Technician)
Aid with ill/injured patients that are away from the hospital. They use IV’s, preform CPR, and give a rapid trama assessment to the patient.
Registered Nurse
Establishes and contributes to a plan of treatment, help preform diagnostic tests and analyze the data.
License Practical Nurse
Work under physicians or RNs to provide care, monitor patients, and talk to them about medical history and conditions then share the info they receive with the physician or RN.
Nursing Assistant (CNA)
Care for patients by doing basic nursing functions. Ex: serve food, bathing patients, transfer them from their bed to a chair.
Home Health Aid
Help people with basic health care needs, they work for certified home health or hospice agencies.
Audiologist
Diagnoses conditions such as hearing loss or balance-related problems.
Audiometric Technician
Uses audiometric equipment to test hearing and then record, and report the results.
Speech Language Pathologist
Help people who have speech or language disorders. Clients may include people who stutter, children with developmental disabilities that record their speech, people who suffered from strokes or trauma, people with cerebral palsy, or other disorders that impair their ability to speak, and people with swallowing disorders.
Speech Language Pathologist Assistant
Works with clients individually or in groups to implement a plan designed by a speech-language pathologist. Some specialize in certain groups/disorders.
Ophthalmologist
Specialize in vision + eye care. They perform eye exams, prescribe glasses/contacts, and diagnose/treat eye diseases.
Optometrist
Primary eye care providers, not medical doctors, can do SOME procedures, like ophthalmologists (Ophthalmologists do less)
Ophthalmic Medical Technicians
These professionals help ophthalmologists carry out their own tests, help patients figure out how to use medication, and help with tasks like putting contacts in.
Athletic Trainer
Teach people how to condition so they don’t get hurt in sports or physical activities. They treat injuries and help people recover from injuries.
