What is Chagas’ disease?

A

Vector borne disease (protozoa Trypanosoma cruzi)
- acutely: young dogs (acute collapse, recumbent, pale mm, peripheral lymphadenopathy) fatal myocarditis + arrythmias
- chronic: ascites, pleural effusion, edema (Right CHF)
- Dx: blood smear, blood titers
- Tx: just palliative
** prevalent in hunting/outside dogs

What is renal secondary hyperparathyroidism (RHPTH)?

A

A complication of chronic renal failure; increasing systemic PTH levels
- GFR is reduced over time due to renal damage —> Phosphate levels increase, lowering Cai levels and D3 levels, increasing PTH
- leads to v,PU/PD, depression, OE skeletal lesions (rubber jaw - super painful and displaced teeth), lameness, fractures
- Dx: BW (BUN, creatinine, PTH)
- Tx: phosphorus restricted diet, phosphate binders (aluminum hydroxid, +/- calcitriol

What is fibrocartilaginous embolism?

A

Infarction of the spinal cord due to an occlusion of spinal cord arteries or veins or both. Thought to arise from IVD
- present in adult large breeds
- acute onset of gait dysfunction during activities, focal, asymmetric, spinal pain often absent (non-ambulatory paraparesis)
- Dx: MRI
