Vector borne disease (protozoa Trypanosoma cruzi)
- acutely: young dogs (acute collapse, recumbent, pale mm, peripheral lymphadenopathy) fatal myocarditis + arrythmias
- chronic: ascites, pleural effusion, edema (Right CHF)
- Dx: blood smear, blood titers
- Tx: just palliative
** prevalent in hunting/outside dogs
What is renal secondary hyperparathyroidism (RHPTH)?
A complication of chronic renal failure; increasing systemic PTH levels
- GFR is reduced over time due to renal damage —> Phosphate levels increase, lowering Cai levels and D3 levels, increasing PTH
- leads to v,PU/PD, depression, OE skeletal lesions (rubber jaw - super painful and displaced teeth), lameness, fractures
- Dx: BW (BUN, creatinine, PTH)
- Tx: phosphorus restricted diet, phosphate binders (aluminum hydroxid, +/- calcitriol
What causes the decreased body temp in bitches before the onset of parturition?
Decrease in serum progesterone
What is fibrocartilaginous embolism?
Infarction of the spinal cord due to an occlusion of spinal cord arteries or veins or both. Thought to arise from IVD
