A

Collars: Any dog you handle should at least wear a collar, which allows for easier control there are several different types of collars that are used for this purpose.

Muzzles: Muzzles are temporary devices applied to the nose and mouth to prevent the animal from biting or to serve as a distraction. There are two types of muzzles wire-basket muzzles and nylon muzzles; you can also improvise a muzzle out of bandages and even a leash.

Head Snare: Also called a restraint/rabies pole is a long tubular handle with a thick retractable wire inside and is used to catch and restrain vicious dogs.

What is a Training Collar and how do you put one on a dog?

A

A training collar consists of stainless-steel links with a ring at each end, never leave a dog unattended in this collar because it can catch easily on cage bars.
To put a training collar on a dog first, chose a collar approximately two inches longer than the circumference of the dog’s head. Secondly, place the collar on the dog with the loose end which takes the leash, over the back of the dog; which is the top of its neck.
Once the collar and leash are in the appropriate position, lead the animal with short, firm tugs.

A

The wire basket muzzle which is a small cup placed over the end of the dog’s nose and clipped behind its ears, this allows the dog to pant but some dogs can bite through.

Nylon muzzles are the most common type of muzzle used in the veterinary practice; they just slip over the dog’s nose and clip behind its head.

How do you improvise a Muzzle out of Gauze Bandages for a Dog and a Pug-nosed Dog?

A

To improvise a muzzle for a dog from bandages:
Take a long piece of bandage and tie a loop at its midsection, approach the dog from the side or back and slip the loop over the end of the dog’s nose.
Quickly tighten the loop and bring the ends of the gauze under the dog’s neck.
Cross the ends over and then pull them behind the dog’s neck and tie them in a half bow or slip knot.

To improvise a muzzle for a pug-nosed dog:
Take a long piece of bandage and tie a loop at its midsection, approach the dog from the side or back and slip the loop over the dog’s nose with the tie under the jaw.
Pull the ends of the gauze behind the ears, and then tie them securely.
One end of the gauze should be drawn down across the dog’s forehead and slid under the loop at the top of the nose.

How do you Approach a Dog?

A

Before approaching a dog assess the situation and make sure that the dog can both see and hear you coming, observe the dog carefully for any signs of fear or aggression. Place the back of your hand out no higher than the dog’s nose; this allows the dog to smell you and get accustomed to your presence, then coax the animal slowly and with a cheerful tone.
When the dog is comfortable and accepts your handling, you may escort it into the examination room.

Q

How do you lift a large uninjured Dog weighing over 50 Ibs?

A

To lift a large dog two people should be present.
These two people should crouch down on the same side of the dog. The first people should restrain the dog’s head by placing one arm around its neck and the other around the dog’s chest. The second person should place one arm around the dog’s abdomen and the other around the dog’s hindquarters.
Simultaneously, both people should lift the dog using their legs not their backs.

Q

How do you remove a Small Dog from its Cage?

A

Before removing the dog, find out if the dog can stand and walk.
If the dog has no problems, partially open the cage door and put a slip leash around its neck, if the dog is small and docile place one arm under its body and the other under its neck.
If the dog is aggressive, place a blanket or towel around it before lifting.

17
Q

How do you lift a Small Dog out of a Cage that has a Back Injury?

A

To lift a small dog that has a back injury; place a muzzle on this dog and slide it to the front of the cage.
Place one arm around the dog’s head and neck, slide the other arm between its rear legs and up under the thorax to keep the back straight as you lift the dog and carry it to the examination table.

18
Q

How do you remove a Large Dog out of a Cage?

A

Many veterinary practices keep large-caged dogs leashed, with the leash slipped through the bars of the cage door; this allows the handler to move the dog toward the door by just pulling the leash.
If the dog can’t walk or stand, a leash is unnecessary; gently lift the dog from the cage.

19
Q

How do you perform the standing restraint on a dog?

A

First, place one hand in front of the dog’s neck, then cradle the dog’s head in the crook of your elbow. Place your second arm under the dog’s abdomen and pull the dog snug against your body.
For another variation; you can place your second arm around the dog’s hindquarters instead of under it’s abdomen.

20
Q

How do you perform the sitting restraint of a dog?

A

Place one arm around the dog’s hindquarters and gently tuck it into the sitting position. Place your second arm around the dog’s neck; then cradle it’s head in the crook of your elbow and gently pull the dog snuggly against your body.

21
Q

How do you perform sternal recumbency on a dog?

A

Place one arm around the dog’s neck and cradle it’s head; then gently tuck the dog into the sitting position. Now, place your weight on the dog’s front shoulders to make it lie down; then reach your arms over the dog’s back and pull it snugly against your body.

22
Q

How do you perform lateral recumbency on a dog?

A

Place the dog on its side with its spine against the front of your body, then grasp the dog’s forelegs with one hand, securing your grip by placing a finger between the forelegs. Then press down slightly with your forearm on the base of the dog’s neck and use your other hand to grasp the dog’s rear legs.

23
Q

What is Venipuncture?

A

Venipuncture is puncturing a vein to collect blood or to administer medication.

24
Q

What are the most common venipuncture sites on a dog?

A

The cephalic: which is along the dog’s foreleg.
The saphenous: which is along the outer surface of the dog’s rear leg.
The jugular: which is on the front of the dog’s neck.

25
Q

How do you occlude a vein?

A

To occlude a vein; block the vein’s circulation by pressing on it with your finger, this pools the blood in the vein so you can easily see it.

26
Q

How do you restrain a dog for Cephalic venipuncture?

A

First, place one arm around the dog’s neck so its head rests in the crook of your elbow, then reach your other arm across the dog’s back and pull the dog snugly against your body. Extend the same arms to grasp the dog’s opposite forelimb, near the elbow with your right hand. Hold this forelimb as you occlude the vein. Maintain grasp while you remove your thumb from the vein onto the injection site.

27
Q

How do you restrain a dog for Saphenic Venipuncture?

A

Position the dog in lateral recumbency; then grab the dog’s upper hind leg just below the knee so the skin over the vein is pulled tight to occlude the vein and to prevent it from rolling. When directed release the vein and apply pressure to the injection site to allow a clot to form.

28
Q

How do you restrain a dog for jugular venipuncture?

A

First, position the dog onto its sternum with its forefeet extending off of the table. Stand alongside the dog, then place your right hand under the dog’s muzzle and point the dog’s nose toward the ceiling. You may need to move the dog’s head side to side or up and down to make the vein prominent. With your left hand grab the dog’s forelegs just above the feet hold them together and pull them to align them with the dog’s nose. Once the procedure is complete apply pressure to the injection site.

29
Q

When venipuncture is complete what should you do?

A

Once the procedure is complete, maintain moderate restraint to prevent the dog from jumping off of the table.
