Doctrine Flashcards
How does God reveal himself to us?
Scripture (John 1:1) and Creation (Romans 1:18-20)
What is special revelation?
Special revelation is how God has chosen to reveal Himself through miraculous means including physical appearances of God, dreams, visions, the written Word of God, and most importantly—Jesus Christ.
What is general revelation?
The knowledge of God through creation.
What do you believe about the Bible?
The Bible is
- the very Word of God
- Authoritative (Nothing has higher authority)
- Inerrant (True)
- Clear (Anyone can read it and understand the Gospel)
- Necessary
- Sufficient (Nothing else needed to know God)
What is 2 Timothy 3:16?
All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness
What is your view of inspiration and does it extend to bible translations?
Inspiration is that the Bible was written by man but God inspired the words to be written. 2 Pet 1:21
It should extend to translations that were carefully translated from the earliest manuscripts.
What is 2 Peter 1:21
For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Why do we only have 66 books?
The early church fathers chose these books as Scripture because they needed to combat false teachings that were arising. These books were self attested to as Scripture.
Should we expect anymore books to the Bible?
I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book; if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. Rev 22:18
What is the canon and how was it determined?
The canon is the 66 books of the Bible. Determined by the early church fathers.
Do you believe in scriptural inerrancy, and what do you mean by the use of that word? How does it impact your teaching and/or preaching?
Inerrancy means that it is true and non-contradictory.
It means we can safely and completely rely on the Bible as the basis for teaching and preaching.
How would you describe God? (names, attributes, etc.)
Glorious, Holy, righteous, omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, all-good, unchanging, sovereign, eternal, loving, just, wrathful, patient, merciful, gracious, faithful, true
Do you believe that there is only one God?
Yes Deut 6:4
What is Deuteronomy 6:4?
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
What is your understanding of the Trinity?
- God is three persons.
- Each person is fully God.
- There is one God.
What is your view of creation?
Literal 6, 24 hour days, creation. The earth is young. Man is God’s greatest creation as being made in His image.
What is your position regarding the Virgin birth? Why is it important?
Jesus was born by Mary who was a virgin. There had to be zero chance that his father was a man or he would have been born into sin. If born into sin, he would have been stained by sin and couldn’t have been our perfect atoning sacrifice.
How do you understand the expression “fully God and fully Man” as applied to Christ?
He had to be fully man because man’s sin required man’s death. Jesus fulfilled this. He had to be fully God because no man could truly fulfill the law as Jesus did.
For whom did Christ die? What difference does His death make?
Christ died for all people (John 3:16). His death completely fulfilled the law (Matt 5:17) thus no longer requiring animal sacrifices. Man can now be found righteous before God by placing their faith in Jesus’s work (1 John 1:9)
What is Matthew 5:17?
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
What is 1 John 1:9?
If you confess your sins, God is just and faithful to forgive them and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness.
Why was Christ’s death necessary?
Man could never perfectly live up to the requirements of the law. We are stained by inherited sin from birth.
“If it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will” (Matt 26:39). It obviously was not possible for there to be another way.
What is Luke 24:25-26 and what is the context?
“O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”
After his resurrection, Jesus was walking the road to Emmaus and talking to 2 disciples. Speaks to the necessity of Christ’s death.
What is Matthew 26:39?
If it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will
Hebrews 2:17 speaks to the necessity of Christ’s death. What is it?
He had to be made like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitation for the sins of the people
What is the nature of Christ’s resurrection?
Christ was resurrected in a physical body.
What is the importance of the resurrection?
It shows that he has power and victory over death.
- It ensures our regeneration. (1 Peter 1:3)
- It ensures our justification. (Romans 4:25)
- It ensures we will receive perfect resurrection bodies as well. (1 Cor 15:12-58)
What is 1 Peter 1:3?
“we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead”
Speaks to the resurrection ensuring our spiritual regeneration.
What is Romans 4:25?
Paul says that Jesus “was put to death for our trespasses and raised for our justification.”
Speaks to the resurrection ensuring our justification.
What does the passage 1 Cor 15:12-58 discuss?
In calling Christ the “first fruits”, Paul uses a metaphor from agriculture to indicate that we will be like Christ. Just as the “first fruits” or the first taste of the ripening crop show what the rest of the harvest will be like for that crop, so Christ as the “first fruits” shows what our resurrection bodies will be like when, in God’s final “harvest”, he raises us from the dead and brings us into his presence.
What are evidences of Christ’s resurrection?
He appeared to his disciples many times before the ascension. They touched him and knew him to be real. He appeared to Saul who became Paul.
Matt 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20
Where is the Lord now and what is he doing on behalf of all believers?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. John 14:3
Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Romans 8:34
Did Jesus claim to be God?
“Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am” John 8:58 (God revealed himself as I AM in Exodus.)
“I and the Father are one.” John 10:30
Does Scripture claim that Jesus is God?
Isaiah 7:14: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” Immanuel means God with us.
Isaiah 9:6: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Colossians 1:15-16: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him
Plus John 8:58 and John 10:30.
