Q

Why do we only have 66 books?

A

The early church fathers chose these books as Scripture because they needed to combat false teachings that were arising. These books were self attested to as Scripture.

Q

What is your position regarding the Virgin birth? Why is it important?

A

Jesus was born by Mary who was a virgin. There had to be zero chance that his father was a man or he would have been born into sin. If born into sin, he would have been stained by sin and couldn’t have been our perfect atoning sacrifice.

Q

How do you understand the expression “fully God and fully Man” as applied to Christ?

A

He had to be fully man because man’s sin required man’s death. Jesus fulfilled this. He had to be fully God because no man could truly fulfill the law as Jesus did.

Q

For whom did Christ die? What difference does His death make?

A

Christ died for all people (John 3:16). His death completely fulfilled the law (Matt 5:17) thus no longer requiring animal sacrifices. Man can now be found righteous before God by placing their faith in Jesus’s work (1 John 1:9)

Q

Why was Christ’s death necessary?

A

Man could never perfectly live up to the requirements of the law. We are stained by inherited sin from birth.

“If it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will” (Matt 26:39). It obviously was not possible for there to be another way.

What is the importance of the resurrection?

A

It shows that he has power and victory over death.

  1. It ensures our regeneration. (1 Peter 1:3)
  2. It ensures our justification. (Romans 4:25)
  3. It ensures we will receive perfect resurrection bodies as well. (1 Cor 15:12-58)

Q

What does the passage 1 Cor 15:12-58 discuss?

A

In calling Christ the “first fruits”, Paul uses a metaphor from agriculture to indicate that we will be like Christ. Just as the “first fruits” or the first taste of the ripening crop show what the rest of the harvest will be like for that crop, so Christ as the “first fruits” shows what our resurrection bodies will be like when, in God’s final “harvest”, he raises us from the dead and brings us into his presence.

Q

Does Scripture claim that Jesus is God?

A

Isaiah 7:14: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” Immanuel means God with us.

Isaiah 9:6: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Colossians 1:15-16: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him

Q

In Phillipians 2:7-9, of what did Christ empty himself (kenosis - Greek term)?

A

Kenosis means made himself nothing. This means that Jesus humbled himself by becoming a Jewish baby bound for the cross. He did not give up his divine attributes, but did choose to temporarily not exercise them.

36
Q

Can you give 3 examples of how the Holy Spirit was active in the Old Testament?

A

He empowered Joshua with leadership skills and wisdom (Numbers 27:18).

Empowered Saul to arouse him to battle against the enemies of Israel (1 Sam 11:6)

Came upon David when he was anointed as King (1 Sam 16:13)

37
Q

What is the Spirit’s role in relation to the new birth?

A

New birth is also called regeneration. We are so dead in our sins, that we can’t respond to the Gospel on our own. The Holy Spirit opens our eyes so that we can see clearly and make a clear response.

“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” John 3:8

38
Q

When and how does an individual exercise faith?

A

Saving faith is trust in Jesus Christ as a living person for forgiveness of sins and for eternal life with God.

Conversion is our willing response to the gospel call, in which we sincerely repent of sins and place our trust in Christ for salvation.

39
Q

What is the baptism in/of the Holy Spirit and when does it take place in reference to the new birth?

A

Baptism in the Holy Spirit refers to the activity of the Holy Spirit at the beginning of the Christian life when he gives us new spiritual life (regeneration) and cleanses us and gives a clear break with the power and love of sin (initial stages of sanctification). In this way “baptism in the Holy Spirit” refers to all that the Holy Spirit does at the beginning of our Christian lives. But this means that it cannot refer to an experience after conversion, as the Pentecostal interpretation would have it.
1 Cor. 12:13

40
Q

What is the difference between indwelling and filling of the Spirit?

A

Indwelling is what happens to all Christians when they become a Christian. An increased filling of the Holy Spirit is something that can happen to a Christian to help empower them for ministry, use of spiritual gifts, or to increase sanctification.

Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, again when speaking before the Sanhedrin, and again when praying with a group of Christians. He had the Spirit indwelling already, but was filled even more at different times.

41
Q

What are outward evidences that a person is filled with the Spirit?

A

Galatians 5:22-24
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such thing there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

42
Q

How does the Spirit continue to minister in the believer’s life after the new birth?

A

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth…” John 16:13

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” Romans 8:26

43
Q

What is the sealing of the Spirit?

A

“In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, which is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory” (Eph 1:13-14)

The seal of the Holy Spirit is God’s guarantee of our future, eternal inheritance. God is faithful.

44
Q

What is the purpose of spiritual gifts?

A

They are given for the common good (1 Cor 12:7) and they are all to be used for edification (1 Cor 14:26), or for building up the church.

To equip the church to carry out its ministry until Christ returns (1 Cor 1:7)

45
Q

What kind of ministry does the Holy Spirit exercise toward non-believers?

A

And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgement. John 16:8

46
Q

Can you demonstrate that the Spirit is a Person? God?

A

Matthew 28:19 says, “baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” This places the Spirit on the same level as the Father and the Son which makes him equal as God.

47
Q

How did man come into existence?

A

Created by God on the 6th day of the creation narrative. God created Adam, then Eve from a rib of Adam. It was not good for man to be alone.

48
Q

How was man made in the image of God?

A

With intellect, rationale, morality, creativity, and dominion over creatures.

49
Q

What is meant by the fall of man?

A

When, for the first time, man decided his own wants and desires were better than God’s commands.

50
Q

What effect did the first sin have on Adam and Eve?

A

Shame entered. Separation from God occurred and they no longer had intimate relationship with Him. Eternal death was the penalty. They were ousted from the Garden of Eden. Man had to experience toil. Women had to experience pain in childbirth. There would be conflict between man and woman (Man ruling harshly over his wife and woman desiring the man’s position)

51
Q

What does total depravity mean?

A

All people are completely dead in their sin apart from the redeeming work of Jesus Christ. We can doing nothing of our own to earn merit or favor in front of God.

52
Q

What is a biblical definition of sin?

A

Any failure to conform to the moral law of God in act, attitude, or nature.

53
Q

Who is the originator or author of sin?

A

Satan. God created the angels, who, some of them, then decided to rebel against God.

54
Q

What is the effect of sin on man and creation?

A

Man and creation were cursed.

55
Q

When does one receive the sin nature?

A

In the womb. “The wicked go astray from the womb, they err from their birth” Psalm 58:3

56
Q

What is necessary for the forgiveness of sins?

A

Confession, repentance, and belief in Jesus

57
Q

How did God provide a remedy for man’s sin?

A

Knowing that we could not do anything about it ourselves, He sent His Son to live as a man, perfectly, so that he could die the death needed to atone for our sins.

John 3:16

58
Q

What must someone do to receive salvation?

A

Confess their sins, repent from them, and believe in Jesus

59
Q

Is the believer assured of his eternal salvation or may it be forefeited?

A

Assured.

“And I am sure of this, He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6

“All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out…And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day”
John 6:37-39

60
Q

How do “faith” and “works” relate to the believer’s salvation?

A

The righteous shall live by faith. Habakkuk 2:4

61
Q

Define propitiation.

A

A sacrifice that bears God’s wrath to the end and in so doing changes God’s wrath toward us into favor.

62
Q

Define redemption.

A

Christ’s saving work viewed as an act of “buying back” sinners out of their bondage to sin and Satan, through the payment of a ransom

63
Q

Define repentance.

A

A heartfelt sorrow for sin, a renouncing of it, and a sincere commitment to forsake it and walk in obedience to Christ

64
Q

Define regeneration.

A

A secret act of God in which he imparts new spiritual life to us; sometimes called “being born again”

65
Q

Define justification.

A

An instantaneous legal act of God in which (1) he thinks of our sins as forgiven and Christ’s righteousness as belonging to us, and (2) declares us to be righteous in his sight. No longer guilty before God.

66
Q

Define sanctification.

A

A progressive work of God and man that makes us more and more free from sin and more like Christ in our actual lives

67
Q

Define glorification.

A

The final step in the application of redemption. It will happen when Christ returns and raises from the dead the bodies of all believers for all time who have died, and reunites them with their souls, and changes the bodies of all believers who remain alive, thereby giving all believers at the same time perfect resurrection bodies like his own.

68
Q

How do you respond to someone who says you must be baptized to be saved?

A

“For by grace you have been saved through faith…” Eph 2:8

Baptism is a public proclamation of your decision but is not a saving act.

69
Q

What is the role of each Person of the Trinity in salvation?

A

Holy Spirit stirs your heart so that you can believe.

Jesus paid the penalty for your sins through his atoning death on the cross.

God justifies you and applies the righteousness of Jesus to you.

70
Q

How were Old Testament saints saved?

A

By grace through faith. They took God at his word and were faithful in obedience toward Him and trusting him in their salvation.

71
Q

Can someone be saved apart from hearing and responding to the gospel of Jesus Christ? Why or why not?

A

No. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

72
Q

What is the local church?

A

The local community of believers.

73
Q

What is the purpose and function of the local church?

A

Worship, Discipleship, Evangelism, and Mercy ministries

74
Q

What are the biblical offices in the church? What are their qualifications? Who may hold each role?

A

Deacon and Elder. 1 Timothy 3 provides a list of qualifications for both. It also discusses who can hold them, but it is men with certain qualifications.

75
Q

What is your view of baptism (who, how, and when)?

A

Baptism is a public proclamation of having made a decision to follow Christ and is a public portrayal if being born again and united into Christ. It should only be done for a Christian who has made a profession of faith and, in my opinion, only when they really understand what they are doing. It is full immersion.

76
Q

What is the difference between the visible church and the invisible church? Who is in the new covenant?

A

The visible church is all that we can see of the community of believers. The invisible church is the souls of those in the church. We cannot see their souls and cannot truly know their salvation. It is expected that there are some members of local churches who are not of the redeemed.

77
Q

What is your view of the Lord’s supper?

A

It is a church ordinance. It symbolizes the death of Christ, the spilling of his blood and the breaking of his body, for our sins. We ingest it to symbolize our unity with Christ and our unity as the church.

78
Q

To whom was the Great Commission given?

A

To all believers

79
Q

What is the meaning of “angel” in the Old and New Testaments?

A

Created, spiritual beings with high intelligence and moral judgements

Q

Can a believer be possessed by a demon?

A

No…“Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

Romans 6:14, “For sin will have no dominion over you…”

81
Q

Can a believer be oppressed by a demon?

A

A believer can be attacked by a demon.

82
Q

What are we commanded to do in order to be ready for spiritual battle?

A

Ephesians 6 The armor of God

83
Q

Is hell a literal, conscious, eternal place reserved for the unsaved? Why or why not?

A

Yes. Luke 16 and Revelation 14

84
Q

Do you believe that Christ could potentially return at any moment? Why or why not?

A

Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour. Matt 25:13

85
Q

Do you believe in a literal new heaven and new earth?

A

Yes.
