Paschal Mystery
The unified total event of Christ’s Passion, death, Resurrection, Ascension and sending of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost), insofar as it reveals and accomplishes God’s previously hidden plan of salvation.
Parish
A defined, stable community, of Christian faithful, usually established locally, within a geographical section of a diocese, and entrusted by the diocesan bishop, through the pastoral care of a priest, called a pastor.
Paul
prominent early Christian missionary and “apostle to the Gentiles.”
Pentecost
50 days after the Resurrection, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the frightened Apostles. This important event is liturgically celebrated on “Pentecost Sunday (50 days after Easter)”, and is also known as the “Birthday of the Church”
Pharisees
A Jewish sect during the time of Jesus; who represented the intellectual sector of their people, because they were avid and contentious students and teachers of Jewish Religious Law. In the Gospels, Jesus is portrayed as challenging some of their interpretation of Jewish Law.
Pope
The title of the Visible Head of the Roman Catholic Church; Bishop of Rome
Sermon on the Mount
The comprehensive presentation of the teachings of Jesus as presented in the Gospel of Matthew (Chapters 5-7); a briefer version is found in the Gospel of Luke 6:20-49 (called Sermon on the Plain); it contains the teachings of Jesus on true discipleship, including an explanation of the Beatitudes, the Lord’s Prayer, and the relationship of the Old Law to the New Law in Christ.
Sacrament of Penance
Another name for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the sacrament that by means of certain acts of the penitent and by the absolution of a qualified priest, remits sins committed after Baptism.
Roman Catholic
All Christians whose faith, worship, and practice are in communion with the Bishop of Rome, whom they acknowledge as the Vicar of Christ and the Visible Head of the Church founded by Jesus Christ.
Psalms (Book of)
A collection of 150 Israelite religious lyrics, poems, and prayers by many authors; Generally speaking the Book of Psalms is “Israel’s Music”.
Prayer of the Faithful
the litany (prayer) of general intercessions at Mass or during the Liturgy of the Hours.
Prophets
Intermediaries who transmit communications from God to particular individuals or to the people as a whole.
Promised Land
The Land of Canaan which eventually becomes renamed Israel and then Palestine. Today we refer to this land as the Holy Land. According to the Book of Genesis, this land was promised to the Israelites by God.
Prodigal Son
The Prodigal (meaning wasteful) Son, also known as the Lost Son, is one of the best known parables of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke; one son takes inheritance and squanders it, the other loyal son becomes jealous when he returns, and the Father forgives.
Priest
One who performs the basic ordained ministry in the Roman Catholic Church. A man, who through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, is ordained for the service of the People of God; he has the authority to celebrate the Eucharist, to administer the Sacraments, to preach the Word of God, and to perform pastoral functions according to the mandate of his Ecclesiastical Superiors.
