How do you safely move a boat into position at the dock?
A
By holding it by the shrouds.
NEVER try to hold it by just the bow or stern lines!

How to decide in what direction to leave the dock?
A
Always choose the direction with the greatest angle to the dock.
Note-1: the tiller is useless at low speeds. However, the wind will push you leeward. Never leave in a direction where this can cause you problems.
Note-2: backing the jib will help in turning the bow to leeward faster.
