“bubbles gargled delicately” vs “I sickened, turned, and ran”
A
At first, in his childhood, even the disgusting imagery of bubbles gargling in a rotting flax-dam had some beauty to be found. But, when he is older, the beauty is no longer seen, only the sickening images.

A
He used to collect the frogspawn, showing the childish fascination, while his older self seems almost scared of it, as the spawn “clutches” him, not escaping.
