What services does DNS provide?
A
- Translates host name to IP address and other way around
- Host aliasing: get canonical hostname when given alias hostname
- mail aliasing: same thing as above but for e-mail addresses
- load distribution

What are the problems with a centralized design?
A
single point of failure: whole internet would crash
too high of traffic volume
distance from certain clients would cause extra delay
maintenance would be a pain
