What is the primary use for DNS?
DNS is the system used on the internet to translate domain names (e.g. www.example.com) to actual machines to contact.
What does ‘lookup’ mean in the context of the DNS?
Lookup is the process of converting a domain name to a machine to contact.
What are ‘record types’ in the context of the DNS?
Record types are the different result types that each domain can have for a lookup.
Name 3 of the most common record types.
NS records, A records and MX records.
What do the letters ‘NS’ in NS record stand for?
Name Server
What are NS record lookups used for?
NS record lookups are used to work out what machine to contact for other record lookups.
What record types are generally specified when registered a domain, and why?
NS record types, also called name servers. These are specified as the source for all other record lookups.
What does the ‘A’ in A record stand for?
Address
What are A record lookups used for?
They are used when you want to visit a website for a given domain.
What does each A record lookup return?
An IP address which identifies a specific machine on the internet to contact to get the webpage.
What does ‘MX’ in MX record stand for?
Mail Exchanger
What are MX record lookups used for?
They are used when you want to send email to a given domain.
What does each MX record lookup return?
A list of mail exchanger machines to contact to deliver email for the domain to.
