What is the purpose of a DNS A Record?
It maps an FQDN to an IPv4 IP address
What is the purpose of a DNS AAAA Record?
It maps an FQDN to an IPv6 IP address
What is the purpose of a DNS CNAME Record?
Canonical name - an alias that is used to “hide” the actual host name
What is the purpose of a DNS NS Record?
The name of an authoritative name server. This is a name server (DNS server) for a specific zone which may, in turn, reference an A record.
What is the purpose of a DNS PTR Record?
Maps and IP address to an FQDN; This is the reverse of an A record or AAAA record
What is the purpose of a DNS MX Record?
Mail Exchange - this specifies a mail server, such as mail.domain.com
What is the purpose of a DNS SRV Record?
Service record which contains a service, protocol (TCP/UDP/SSL) Priority, Weight, TTL, and Name
What is the purpose of a DNS TXT Record?
This just contains a string of text. Sometimes used by providers or cloud services for temporary domain discovery.
What is the purpose of a DNS SOA Record?
Start of Authority - Includes zone details like authoritative server, TTL, owner, and others.
