DNA Viruses Flashcards
1
Q
Parvovirus
A
- B19 causes fifth’s disease resulting in abortions and fetal infections.
- In adults it causes arthralgia (joint disorders)
- In dogs, it causes severe hemorrhagic diarrhea and death
- Linear SS DNA virus
2
Q
Polyoma Virus
A
- Oncogenic
- JC causes Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy
- BK causes BK Nephropathy or Polyomavirus-associated nephropathy
3
Q
Papilloma Virus
A
- Oncogenic
- Cause warts that can be cancerous but not always
4
Q
Adenoviruses
A
- Linear DS DNA
- Cause of cold-like symptoms
- Cause conjunctivitis or pink eye and gastrointestinal infections
5
Q
Herpes Viruses
A
- Enveloped DS Linear DNA
- Latent infections
6
Q
Pox Viruses
A
- Enveloped, complex, covalently joined DS DNA
- Some of the largest viruses known
- Cause acute infection
- Infect several different species
7
Q
Attachment
A
Occurs via surface receptors such as heparan sulfate, glycosaminoglycans, integrins, sialic acid residues etc. Some viruses may require more than one receptor [secondary or co-receptor].
8
Q
Entry
A
Occurs by:
1) receptor mediated endocytosis
2) endocytosis via clathrin coated pills
3) endocytosis by association with caveolae or lipid rafts
